Gilbert de Montsalvat Year of the Hippo (puro Nicaragua)
A Gilbert de Montsalvat that is anything but conventional. An absolutely gargantuan size and more than enough power for this limited edition of 499 sets. Behind this edition lies a subtle nod to the traditional ‘Years of…’ – which is why its launch took place, quite naturally, on 1 April.
Tasting menu
The first puffs open with hints of hazelnut. The hippopotamus has emerged: very quickly, the cigar surges ahead with more than sustained strength and will attack without hesitation. Don’t even think about a V-cut, cross-cut or zigzag cut. A straight, clean and decisive cut will allow you to keep the beast under control – if only for a brief moment.
Beneath its creamy, nutty notes lies a raw power. Hippopotamidae takes the palate by storm with authority — even if it does make your head spin after the initial impact.

The ‘short’ story by Gilbert de Montsalvat
The Year of the Hippopotamus
: The 13th unofficial sign of the zodiac. The name ‘hippopotamus’ comes from Ancient Greek and means ‘river horse’. Biologically speaking, it is actually closer to the whale than to the horse — a symbol of depth and power.
The nature of the Hippo
On the outside, the Hippo appears calm and composed. But don’t be fooled: on the inside, they’re a real ticking time bomb. They avoid unnecessary drama and never let themselves be rushed. However, anyone who crosses their boundaries will face a clear and unambiguous reaction.
Depth and loyalty
. Their element is water. It symbolises the unconscious and a remarkable emotional depth. Hippo types are never superficial. They possess natural authority and unshakeable loyalty. Those who belong to their carefully chosen circle of friends enjoy absolute protection. Their minor weaknesses? A certain stubbornness and a tenacious memory for grudges.
Harmony and pleasure
: The Hippo embodies a quiet strength and an uncompromising sense of self-respect. It gets on wonderfully with the Ox and shares with the Pig a deep love of tranquillity and genuine pleasures.

The cigar-related anecdote
Beneath his calm and composed exterior, Raymondo has plenty of surprises in store for us.
A 13th sign of the zodiac that flirts with the absurd and highlights the quirky side of Señor Gilbert de Montsalvat.
