Izambar Athenaeum

Athenaeum (or Athenæum) comes from Latin, which in turn derives from the Greek Athênaion, a term referring to a place dedicated to Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom.

Historically, an athenaeum was a place of study, learning and culture: a library, literary society, academy or learned society.
Today, the term generally refers to a cultural or intellectual club, often linked to the arts, literature or the sciences. In essence, the Athenaeum is a place dedicated to learning and culture.

This is the invitation extended to us by this new Izambar vintage: to join a circle — the circle of those who savour and share the culture of taste centred around this cigar.

In terms of terroir, this cigar takes us on a journey. A subtle Nicaraguan blend, supported by an Indonesian binder, all wrapped in a beautiful Mexican San Andrés wrapper that provides a fine finish and the distinctive aromatic notes characteristic of this region.

Tasting menu

From the moment you pick it up, the Izambar Athenaeum sets the tone with lovely notes of raw dark chocolate. Upon lighting, the smoke unfolds with smoothness and gentleness, enveloping the palate in an immediately pleasant roundness. The first puffs reveal aromas of creamy, slightly toasted coffee, creating a warm and indulgent profile.

The tasting then develops more character, with a more pronounced bitterness reminiscent of an Italian espresso. On the finish, a hint of thyme adds freshness and complexity, before giving way to a comforting scent of warm hay. Gradually, the aromas become more rounded, the profile grows creamier and fuller-bodied, whilst the smokiness retains a smooth, comforting texture.

The draw, smooth and very pleasant, complements this development without ever hindering the smoking experience. The result is a well-balanced cigar, accessible in both its strength and its aromatic profile. The Athenaeum is thus welcoming to occasional smokers, whilst offering enough nuances to hold the attention of more discerning connoisseurs — a cigar to be shared, true to the spirit of the circle it evokes.

Pairing

An unexpected twist, with tobaccos from Mexico and Indonesia that pair perfectly with a strong espresso.
