Haiti: a little-known producer
Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Hispaniola. Unfortunately, natural disasters and political unrest have long hampered Haiti’s development, even though the country enjoys ideal conditions for growing tobacco. Despite these challenges, a handful of passionate producers are keeping an exceptional artisanal craft alive and crafting cigars of remarkable quality, which are now recognised far beyond the country’s borders.
A ‘bohemian’ name
The first inhabitants of Hispaniola, the Taíno people, were already cultivating tobacco long before the arrival of the Europeans. As a tribute to this ancestral heritage, the three founders chose to name their cigar brand BOHEKIO, after a Taíno chief.
The Taíno people are also credited with coining the word ‘tobacco’ and inventing the hammock. Christopher Columbus discovered this cultural heritage when he landed on the island of Hispaniola in 1492, marking the first contact between Europe and the peoples of the Caribbean.
Today, BOHEKIO carries on this centuries-old tradition by paying tribute to the historical roots of Haitian tobacco and the expertise of a land that is part of the cradle of the cigar.
