Tasting note

Notes

If this cigar were to have a common thread, it would be the spices. Constantly evolving from nutmeg and red pepper when the cigar is first lit, to black pepper after the first third and then softening again towards the end, they lull us into a pleasant warmth.

There's also a roasted hazelnut flavour at the start. The smoke is generous from the outset and never leaves us for a moment.

About halfway through our tasting experience, we're surprised by a hint of freshness, which we love, and which goes perfectly with cold tapas.

The slightly creamy finish gives off very pleasant notes of hay and leather.

Pairing

We particularly enjoyed this cigar as an aperitif. With a few cold tapas to give a fresh sensation on the palate.

We paired it with a cocktail of prawns and guacamole, whose zesty flavours were reminiscent of the citrus peel we detected about halfway through the cigar.

The cigar anecdote

Cigar enthusiasts from the Cigar Dojo community had a direct influence on its design, making it an almost 'crowdsourced' product. The success of this cigar was so great that it was reissued in subsequent years.

Undercrown

The story of Jonathan Drew and Marvin Samel begins at college. These two "frat bros" from New York, who love Nicaragua and good cigars, began their adventure in the cigar world by running a small kiosk in town.

Two years later, Jonathan moved to Esteli with a handful of dollars in his pocket and three words of Spanish. He hired a few torcedors to roll the first cigars. Meanwhile, Samel continued to run the New York shop, borrowing money from anyone who would believe in them.

It was a long and winding road until La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate opened in 2007, rolling over 90,000 cigars every day.
