Frederick Charatan was one of the great pioneers of handcrafted English pipes. A Russian-Jewish immigrant who settled in London in the 19th century, he set up his workshop in 1863 in the Mansell Street area. He began by carving pipes from sea foam before turning to briar, a material that was then rapidly gaining popularity.

When tasted uncooked, the aromatic profile immediately brings to mind mulled wine, dominated by winter spices such as cinnamon and cloves. The skin has a rather dry texture, with a slightly sticky feel. The aromas when tasted uncooked are slightly sweet and chocolatey.

Upon lighting, the smoke is full-bodied and generous, offering a creamy, warm sensation. On exhalation, a slight hint of spiciness emerges, accompanied by a distinct note of green pepper – a signature flavour found across all the brand’s ranges.

As the tasting progresses, the aroma evolves towards notes of burnt wood, sandalwood and cedar. The wine as a whole develops a lovely, toasty roundness that is particularly pleasant and well-balanced.

We particularly liked this style, as the flavours are very concentrated whilst remaining well-balanced. There’s no overpowering intensity, just a lovely harmony of warm, comforting flavours.
