Tips on storing cigars

Storing cigars properly is essential to ensure the best possible experience, even several weeks or months after purchase. Whether you’re an occasional smoker or a connoisseur looking to build a collection, proper storage helps preserve the aromas and quality of your cigars.

A simple rule to remember:
consistency in the environment is key.

The best ways to store cigars

When it comes to storing cigars, the humidor is the obvious choice. But there are now a number of options available, suited to all budgets and all purposes.

1. The humidor: the go-to solution

The humidor remains the most elegant and reliable solution, particularly for a collection.

Available in wood, plexiglass or modern materials, it comes in a wide range of sizes. Expect to pay around CHF 200 to 300 for a good-quality entry-level model.

For optimal performance:

  • maintain a humidity level of around 70%
  • use demineralised water or humidity control packets (such as Boveda)
  • prepare your humidor before use by moistening the wood

A well-prepared humidor ensures a stable environment and protects your cigars in the long term.

2. The airtight container (Tupperware-style)

It’s a simple, economical and incredibly effective solution.

An airtight container allows you to create a stable environment at minimal cost. Its transparency is an advantage: it allows you to monitor the humidity without opening the container.

Ideal for:

  • getting started
  • storing a small collection
  • transporting your cigars

Just make sure to:

maintain a humidity level of around 70%

add one or more Boveda packets suitable for the volume

3. The Blue Smoke pouch

If you want to carry a few cigars, a simple solution is to use an airtight pouch with a humidity control system.

This is the most practical option for:

  • travel
  • get-togethers with friends
  • travelling

Compact and effective, it keeps your cigars in good condition for a short period.

All our selections are sent in their own small airtight pouch (without Boveda), which keeps the cigars fresh during transit. Once you get home, you can reuse it for your nights out and weekends away.

4. Blue Smoke humidors

Beyond its practical use, a humidor can also become an object of pleasure and a collector’s item.

A beautiful, well-designed humidor can hold around fifteen cigars whilst adding an aesthetic dimension to your experience.

We’re offering you an engraved Blue Smoke humidor with every new 6-month or 1-year subscription.

What is the ideal environment for a cigar?

Temperature and humidity

Cigars are sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity.

Ideal conditions:

They fear:

Monitoring: an essential habit

To ensure these conditions are met, the use of a hygrometer is strongly recommended.

Some connected models even allow you to monitor changes remotely, which can be useful for a large collection.

Maintaining stable humidity

Boveda sachets are a simple and reliable solution for regulating humidity, particularly for small quantities.

In a very dry environment, you can supplement this with a sponge lightly moistened with demineralised water.

⚠️ Warning: never allow the sponge to come into direct contact with the cigars, as this may damage them (swelling, cracks). The wood of your humidor must not be wet either, as this may cause it to swell or even go mouldy.
