Perdomo Nicaragua BBA Sun Grown

Another moment of sweetness with this Perdomo Bourbon Barrel Aged (BBA). Having tasted both the Connecticut and Sun Grown versions, we opted for the Sun Grown, whose ageing has clearly given it a more ‘smooth’ blend of flavours and a creamier texture.

For this Nicaraguan puro, the wrapper has been aged for at least six years, then matured for a further 14 months in a Bourbon cask, giving it exceptional roundness.

Tasting notes

The BBA features a Sun-grown Nicaraguan wrapper, which is relatively smooth despite the presence of a few visible veins. It feels pleasant to the touch, and the construction appears to be meticulous. When unlit, the cigar gives off roasted notes, dominated by chocolate aromas and a particularly interesting hint of spice.

From the moment it is lit, the draw is very airy, with a lovely smoothness. The cigar reveals a sharp initial flavour, characterised by animal notes and a dominant leathery flavour. Upon lighting, in contrast to the aromas detected when cold, the roasted and chocolatey notes fade to make way for a more woody and leathery profile, offering a robust and distinctive opening. We won’t dwell too much on the initial lighting, as it is not particularly representative of the overall tasting experience.

In the first third, the aromas develop into a mellow profile, featuring a woody base accompanied by hints of black pepper. The cigar remains moderate in strength, offering a pleasant yet characterful experience. On the palate, the smoke is subtle, providing a light sensation, but the real surprise lies in the emergence of notes of toast, which blend beautifully with fresh apple juice, evoking the atmosphere of a Sunday morning brunch.

As the second third progresses, the cigar becomes increasingly smooth and well-balanced. The spicy notes fade, and the cigar becomes truly smooth and pleasant, with a persistent dominance of warm, toasted bread and buttery notes. This rich flavour profile is enhanced by the thick texture of the smoke, which remains light yet more enveloping. The finish is excellent, and the toasted bread aromas linger, imparting a sensation of sweetness and comfort. The smoke, whilst dense, remains unobtrusive, and the ash holds up well, a sign of the cigar’s solid construction.

This Perdomo is a particularly interesting cigar, which develops with subtlety and complexity. It begins with a sharp attack and animal notes, then gradually transforms into a well-rounded and balanced experience, dominated by aromas of toast and leather. Its long finish and buttery character make it a pleasure to smoke over an extended period, whilst its strength remains moderate throughout the smoking session. This cigar is particularly appreciated for its smoothness and its ability to deliver a harmonious smoking experience.

Pairing

Go for a fresh, still apple juice. Its tartness and freshness will perfectly complement this Perdomo.
