Oscar Valladares The Leaf Maduro

The idea of the cigar wrapped in a loose leaf was reminiscent of the first cigars made by the Mayans, who simply rolled tobacco leaves to smoke them. Woody, toasty notes emerge from this well-balanced cigar.

It's like our first Christmas present: a carefully rolled tobacco leaf replaces the cellophane and gives us a real cigar gift: The Leaf Oscar Valladares Maduro. Oscar himself came up with this ingenious idea, out of a concern for the environment and a nod to Mayan culture: "The idea of the cigar wrapped in a loose leaf evoked the first cigars of the Mayans, who simply rolled tobacco leaves to smoke them".

Tasting note

This cigar begins with light peppery notes, heralding a subtly spicy introduction. Very quickly, the dominant woody aromas take over, combining sandalwood and cedar for a refined, warm experience.

As the tasting progresses, toasty flavours develop, accompanied by a dark, earthy character, bringing a depth that will appeal to lovers of complexity.

It's a cigar that invites us to slow down, pause and reflect, a perfect companion for moments of calm and contemplation.

Momentum

An afternoon or evening cigar, or after a meal. So well-balanced and rounded that it stands on its own.

Until 2011, Oscar worked for one of the cigar industry's heavyweights, Rocky Patel. "When I visited Danlí for the first time 15 years ago, I didn't even smoke cigars," admits Oscar, who at the time was transporting visitors for Rocky all over Honduras. "But I immediately fell in love with the wonderful process of making cigars. I realised how special it was to smoke a cigar, because so much individual work goes into it," he recalls. He began to think about how he could be part of the process. Rocky Patel, seeing Oscar's thirst for knowledge and passion for cigars, offered him a full-time position in quality control. Shortly afterwards, as an independent entrepreneur, Oscar managed the distribution of Rocky Patel Premium cigars in South America. But the experience was short-lived: for a variety of reasons, the business didn't prosper, and Oscar was left with a mountain of debt. However, what seemed like the end marked a new beginning for him.
