Tatuaje Black Label Petit Robusto
Sober and effective, the Tatuaje Black Label Petit Robusto has a discreet look. Its short 4 x 50 size is clothed in a tight cape with an oily sheen and fine veins that are perceptible but not excessive. A simple, thin ring at the head gives it a strict, minimalist look, perfectly in keeping with its identity. The simple, unadorned design already sets the tone for a cigar that focuses on substance rather than pomp and circumstance.
Tasting note
Uncooked, the bottling is easy, almost too light. The aromas on the nose evoke wood and a touch of incense, the beginnings of a promising experience. As soon as it is lit, it gets off to a flying start: a veritable flood of spices invades the palate. The draught, initially perceived as too loose, quickly becomes firmer. Gradually, the spicy intensity softens, giving way to a rounder, more balanced woody palette. The smoke, light grey and rather dense, forms opaque curls which give the cigar a rebellious and assertive side. As for the ash, it is crumbly: holding two centimetres in a single block is already quite a feat.
In the second third, the robusto takes an interesting turn. The spices slowly recede, giving way to a new, sweeter aroma, with hints of nuts. The profile becomes rounder and more supple, making it a more soothing, accessible wine, with a background of cocoa.
Known for their powerful blends, Pepin and Jaime Garcia have produced a fine introduction to their world. This little robusto lives up to its promise, delivering a satisfying experience over forty minutes or so. The spicy blend, enriched with hints of cocoa, transports the smoker to the fertile lands of Nicaragua, where it draws all its power and depth of flavour.
Pairing
A little cigar that doesn't shy away from anything. At coffee time (early afternoon rather than early morning), accompany it with a double esperesso. At the end of the day, it's equally at home with a peated whisky.
