Tasting of the Olivia cigar Serie V Liga Especial 135

Oliva Serie V 135th Anniversary Edicion Real

The special format of this cigar allows the Sumatra wrapper (Madame Blue Smoke's pet peeve) to express itself fully right from the start. The proportion of tobacco in the wrapper during the first few puffs is greater than later on, so you can enjoy the spicy flavours and slight sweetness of this perfectly aged tobacco.

The presentation is particularly meticulous: a beautiful lacquered box with a double base to hold a Boveda, and a pretty double ring to adorn the shiny, greasy cape.

Tasting note

When cold, the draft is light with just the right amount of restraint, and the woody notes clearly dominate. Ignition is straightforward, and immediately reveals a large volume of smoke, grey and opaque, accompanied by an attack very spicy. The first third settles on a predominantly wooded, The spices, frank at first, gradually fade as the cigar thickens.

The second third marks the heart of the tasting. The pungent spices at the start melt into a white pepper before returning to a more woody and vanilla, more rounded and full-bodied. As the tasting progresses, the following appear hints of nuts, with a flavourful aftertaste smoke present.

The combustion is exemplary, driven by a very light ash, The wine is compact in the centre and fluffy on the outside, and holds up remarkably well. The finish remains controlled: the power is moderate, with little increase in intensity. The bitterness lingers on the finish and the woody notes remain long after the cigar is finished.

The wine is pleasantly structured, with good depth of oak and plenty of smoke.

Pairing

To be enjoyed with a white tea to subtly enhance the hints of nuts and a good chocolate to underline the gourmet notes in the middle of the tasting.

The cigar anecdote

This format has been chosen to magnify the naturally flared shape of the tobacco leaf, offering a progressive and harmonious expression of the aromas.

Oliva

The Oliva name derives from Melanio Oliva, the grandfather of Gilberto Oliva, now considered the leader of this illustrious family. Melanio began growing tobacco in Cuba as early as 1886, a tradition devotedly continued by his son Hipolito for many years. Later, Gilberto Senior, father of the current generation and a respected figure in the world of tobacco fairs in the United States, faced the challenge of finding land as fertile as that in Cuba after the family exile. After exploring regions such as Panama, the Philippines, Honduras and Mexico, he finally discovered an exceptional terroir in Nicaragua, perfectly suited to his requirements. The cigars produced here reveal deep, earthy flavours, offering a complexity that captivates connoisseurs and leaves an irresistible desire to savour more.
