An agronomist, cigar creator, master blender and author, Didier Houvenaghel has built his career around a simple conviction: to understand a cigar, one must first understand the tobacco. From the soil where the plant grows to the very last centimetre smoked, his work is based on knowledge, patience and the pursuit of balance.
Didier Houvenaghel belongs to a rare breed of cigar enthusiasts: those who seek to understand the cigar in its entirety, from the soil to the finished product.
A Belgian agricultural engineer, he specialised in tobacco and studied in Cuba, notably at the University of Pinar del Río, in the heart of a region closely linked to tobacco cultivation. This agricultural background is a key feature of his approach. For him, a cigar is not simply a product that is put together: it is the result of a complex interplay of factors – the soil, the climate, the tobacco variety, cultivation, fermentation, ageing, rolling and, finally, blending.
Understanding tobacco before crafting a cigar
This desire to trace the product back to its origins has been a driving force for Didier Houvenaghel since his early days. His journey took him, in particular, to Nicaragua, a country whose potential for cigar production he recognised very early on.
At a time when Nicaraguan cigars had not yet achieved the international recognition they enjoy today, Houvenaghel took an interest in the diversity of the country’s terroirs and the possibilities they offered. He went on to develop several brands there and worked with major producers and manufacturers in the industry, notably AJ Fernandez.
His role as master blender involves precisely bringing consistency to this raw material. A cigar is not merely about the quality of a single leaf: one must know how to blend different leaves, from different origins and at different stages of curing, to create a tasting experience.
It is this quest that lies behind all his creations, including Nicarao, La Preferida, Furia and La Ley.
La Ley: the quest for balance
Among its creations, La Ley holds a special place. The brand was founded by Didier Houvenaghel and its cigars are manufactured in Nicaragua, at the AJ Fernandez factory.
The range’s philosophy is based in particular on the use of tobaccos sourced from several countries. For some varieties, the leaves are aged for several years before use, whilst certain Reserva editions undergo further ageing once the cigar has been rolled.
This concept of ageing is central to Houvenaghel’s approach. It reflects an approach that is far removed from the pursuit of immediate results: tobacco must be given time to develop.
The Reserva range is a prime example of this philosophy. The combination of tobaccos that have already matured prior to rolling and a second ageing period following production allows for greater refinement of the cigar’s complexity and the harmonisation of its various components.
Furia, La Preferida and Nicarao: different expressions of the same philosophy
The various brands developed by Didier Houvenaghel are not simply variations on the same cigar. They reflect his desire to explore different profiles and different expressions of tobacco.
Nicarao is closely linked to his Nicaraguan venture. The brand is one of the projects that have helped establish his reputation in the world of cigars. La Preferida, for its part, plays on a combination of smoothness and character, whilst Furia explores another facet of his blend-making craft.
More recently, Furia’s creations continue to reflect this approach. The Furia Inanna² range, for example, uses tobaccos that have been aged for several years before processing, and then undergo a second phase of ageing after rolling. Houvenaghel advocates an approach in which aromatic precision matters more than sheer strength alone.
This pursuit of precision is probably one of the most distinctive features of his work: creating a cigar that has its own personality, yet in which every element contributes to a coherent whole.
‘The Cigar, From Soil to Soul’: sharing nearly twenty years of reflection
But Didier Houvenaghel did not stop at simply creating cigars. He also wanted to set down in writing the knowledge he had accumulated throughout his career.
His book, *The Cigar, From Soil to Soul*, is the culmination of nearly twenty years of work and reflection. Published in two hardback volumes, the book comprises 318 pages divided into eleven chapters and includes over a hundred illustrations.
The title alone sums up the author’s philosophy: ‘From Soil to Soul’.
The aim is to trace the cigar’s journey throughout its entire life cycle. It is therefore not merely a matter of discussing tasting or brands, but of returning to the fundamentals: the plant, the soil, the varieties, tobacco cultivation, the various stages of processing and, ultimately, the cigar that the connoisseur holds between his fingers.
This approach is also what sets the book apart from a mere tasting guide. An article about the book describes it as a deep dive into the science of cigars, from seed to finished product, whilst highlighting Houvenaghel’s ability to make these topics accessible despite their technical nature.
