Rocky Patel Conviction Toro

There are cigars that captivate at first glance. The Rocky Patel Conviction Toro is clearly one of them. Its dark wrapper, marked by fine veins, promises a rich experience, while its impressive golden band adds an almost “royal” touch to the whole. Once removed, it reveals a superb Mexican San Andrés wrapper, tight and clean, a true example of finishing.

In hand, the cigar feels rather tightly rolled, but not excessively so. The draw remains smooth, with a slight, perfectly controlled resistance: no need to force, everything is calibrated.

When cold, the profile is immediately indulgent. Chocolate dominates largely, deep and appetizing, like a promise of intensity… which will soon be confirmed.

First third: power and indulgence

From the lighting, the Conviction shows a powerful but well-balanced temperament. We find a generous hot chocolate, enhanced by a hint of cardamom and spices that bring relief and elegance. The length on the palate is simply exceptional: it settles in and lingers for a long time, never fading.

Technically, it is a model of its kind: the combustion is excellent, and the ash, dense and compact, easily holds for more than 4 cm. The smoke, gray and well-present, develops a very woody character, which structures the whole from the first puffs.

Second third: sandalwood, toasted and leather

The second third evolves towards a more complex and deeper register, with a very beautiful sandalwood, toasted notes, and a touch of leather that adds texture. The whole gradually becomes rounder and more indulgent, and the power begins to decrease slightly, while retaining body.

At the end of the second third, a drier note appears: dry earth, almost mineral, which perfectly prepares the transition to the finish.

Third third: warm black pepper and musky finish

At the start of the last third, black pepper returns more markedly, but in a warm, enveloping version, never aggressive. However, there is a moment when a small purge feels good, just to calm the spicy side linked to nicotine and to resume a more harmonious rhythm.

The end of the tasting densifies: earth, wood, black pepper, with a rich and more musky finish, enhanced by accents of walnut husk (that very typical skin/shell of a nut). An expressive and structured conclusion, which confirms the character of the Conviction.

Pairing: 20-year-old XO Cognac (Domaine des Claires)

The pairing with a 20-year-old XO Cognac – Domaine des Claires works wonderfully. The roundness of the cognac blends perfectly with the power of the cigar, and its fruity and soft side wraps the pepper and spices, while extending the indulgence of chocolate and toasted notes. The very persistent finish of the cognac lingers long on the palate and ideally accompanies the last puffs.

Verdict

The Rocky Patel Conviction Toro is a very good cigar, with true mastery and impeccable technique. The box-press is successful, the combustion behavior exemplary, and the aromatic evolution is marked from start to finish: one never tires, as the profile changes and constantly renews itself.
